Description/Reflection
This picture was taken during an academic exercise in which we were supposed to identify animal dung throughout a grassland area , called Manyara Ranch , to determine which animals used the land , otherwise fondly known as "Dung Day ". We had local Maasai guides help us identify the different types of dung . Manyara Ranch is adjacent to Lake Manyara , which during the dry season dries up , leaving a spacious salt bed . Our professors allowed us to go walking on the dried up lake . With the sun at its peak beating down on us and a seemingly-never ending expanse before us, it seemed as if we were walking to our death . My Maasai guide is the subject of this photograph . He joined us on our walk on the dried lake bed , laughing as we squealed as hot tar splashed on our legs . I never learned my Maasai guides ' name for he only spoke Kimaasai and no Kiswahili , but that afternoon was so powerful to me . I feel as if I made a friend with him as he told me names for things such as snakes or feathers in his language and I shared the names in English . This was the first time I interacted with someone from a completely different culture and it was beautiful .
