Biographical Information for Henry C. Wingblade

Henry C. Wingblade, born in Watervile, Kansas in 1883, became a believer at the age of nine and was baptized in Topeka in 1901 at the age of 17. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1910 and began teaching English at Bethel in 1911, where he remained for 27 years. He went on to earn his Master of Arts in 1931, became ordained in 1933, and received his Doctor of Divinity in 1943, holding many pastoral appointments throughout this time. After a three year-appointment at Addison Street Church in Chicago, Henry Wingblade was chosen to succeed President G. Arvid Hagstrom, and became the first-American born presidnet of Bethel Junior College and Theological Seminary in the Fall of 1941. During his 13-year tenure as president, Wingblade transitioned Bethel from a Junior College to a four-year college and built three new dormitories on the Snelling Avenue campus, as well as a gymnasium and library. Wingblade navigated Bethel through the difficult years of WWII and the subsequent post-war boom in admissions as soldiers returned home. He was known to be very active in the Baptist General Conference, building longstanding relationships between Bethel and many Churches throughout the Conference. He made impressive gains in upgrading Bethel's academic standards and facilities, but more importantly was known across campus as a friendly, unassuming personality who desired that only Christ be magnified through his witness and unceasing devotion to Christ.
