PAUL MINNESOTA komor of his spring marks the completion of twenty-nine years of faithful teaching for Miss Esther Sabel, professor of Religious Educa-tion. The many winning ways which make her so unforgetable to all with whom she comes in con-tact have warmed the hearts of Bethel students through her years of service on our campus. Her ability to cast aside irrelevant details and come to the heart of a problem has made her a favored coun-selor to young people here. Through her efficient man-ner, she commands the respect that makes others ready to follow her and to have confidence in her. It is easy for her to overcome the differences in education, age, and position and put herself in another's place. Her ever-present friendliness and sympathetic attitude inspire others to have confidence in themselves. The sincere interest which Miss Sabel has shown to students has encouraged many to go on with renewed strength to countless avenues of service for the Lord. Many leaders possess some of these desirable qual-ities, but few possess the great array which make Miss Sabel a favorite with all of us. Because of this, and of all that she has done to make our school what it is, we dedicate this book to her in sincere appreciation. MIN ESTHER BABEL 4 5 111 moor, of t may be in the valley where countless dan-gers hide." The words of this hymn of dedi-cation no doubt passed the lips of Ralph Larson many times during his life. Little did anyone realize how dangerous those valleys of service would be in his life, for last fall our conference people were shocked with the news of his death on an Ethiopian mission field. After Ralph had given less than two years of sacrificial service, the Lord saw fit to end his earthly ministry. On November 13, 1951, while riding on his motorcycle to survey new fields, he was shot down by an Ethiopian man. It is hard to realize why it should be that this effective testimony should be so suddenly snatched away and yet we rest in the promise that some-day we'll understand. Our Bethel campus was stunned at the news of Ralph's death because it was but a few short years ago that he was a student leader among us. His winning personality and fervent zeal for saving the lost was an inspiration to all who knew him. And yet, Ralph would not have us mourn his death, but rather have us pray and give to a greater extent than ever before. His most earnest plea would probably be, "won't someone go and take my place to tell those who have never heard, the marvelous story of God's grace." Are we willing to an-swer this plea? RALPH W. LARS011 6 7 8 9 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. I Corinthians 2 : 12,13 M 1 MI nt D M Dun OF COLLEGE C. EMANUEL CARLSON With his every effort bent on producing high quality Christian leadership, Dean Carlson first demonstrates this leadership principle and then encourages others along its pathway. His ad-vice has been invaluable in helping many to come to the right solution in their varied aca-demic and spiritual crises. He has shown him-self to be a friend to those who seek Christian counsel and encouragement in spiritual living. DEAR OF THE SEMINHRY EDWIN J. OMARK Because of his unusual ability to satisfactorily mingle business with religion and both with pleasure, Dean Omark has become a friend and an inspiration to many Bethelites. His warm Christian attitude has helped these students reach a much higher plain of spiritual maturity. His life has proved to those who know him that intimacy with Christ is more than a theological abstraction. ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT H. WYMAN MALMSTEN Accepting his work as a calling from God, H. Wyman Malmsten focuses his energy and whole-hearted devotion toward the accomplishing of his many duties. He has found a certain respect from student and faculty alike for his tireless effort and congenial attitude. In him serious-ness and cheerfulness are blended together with zeal to make a conscientious servant of God. 1 0 11 DR. HENRY C. WINGBLADE PRESIDERT "He is a gentleman and a scholar" is a compliment which finds its personification in our beloved president. With his deep em-phasis on Christian love as the outflowing of a truly Christ-like life, Dr. Wingblade has found his way into the hearts of many students, and through his own living of this precept he has given an added note of sincerity to a Christian campus. For some it is the first time that they have willingly yielded all of their talents to the cause of telling others about our won-derful Lord. The joy of kneeling with a lost soul and then point-ing him to Christ has been that of many gospel team members. These are the experiences which will live the longest in the memory of each Bethel student. E R1 68 69 CONCERTS JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Miss Susan Rusinko PEED The Junior class, in keeping with the trend of past years, presented a Christ centered play on the evenings of March 21 and 22. "Melody", by Kent Prell, was directed by Miss Susan Rusin-ko, instructor in English, and was given at Min-nehaha Academy. In the drama, Christian life is an integral part of the action. Each circum-stance and conflict arises from the individual's interpretation of Christianity. Miss Mildred Bisgrove The Senior Class presented Bethel's student body with a wonderful treat by sponsoring Mr. Raymond McAfee of Chicago in an evening concert. Mr. McAfee's rich baritone voice will long be remembered in the hearts of those who heard him. Bethel's own string ensemble gave of their tal-ents many times during the school year to the students and friends of Bethel. Their concerts are a source of inspiration and enjoyment to those who appreciate fine music. With Jim Rehn-berg as their able leader, they have supervised the religious aspects of our school in a very commendable way. Some of the unforgettable times like Deeper Life Week, all-day prayer meet-ing, the St. Paul Choral Club Concert, and the new Home Missions Week were all a result of the work of this organ-ization. strorn, John We Left to right. Not pictured: Shirley Kilgore, Secretary This year, under the capable leadership of Russ Baustian, the Student Council has done a noteworthy job of fulfilling its purposes which are to insure close co-operation between the students and the faculty for the welfare of the school, to provide for an avenue of communication between the stu-dents and administration, and to solve students' queries. The Freshman Retreat, Homecoming, an all-school roller skating party, and Prospective Students' Days, were but a few of the successful activities under their sponsorship. Directing the chorus was Professor Nels Stjernstrom, whose able leadership molded them into a well trained group. A tour through several mid-western states was the basic activity of the group, but their performances in chapel and in the Twin City churches have been greatly appreciated. An addition to the chorus is the Courier Quartet which re-turned to school this year after touring Europe, especially Scan-dinavia. This quartet, in addition to singing with the male chorus, is well known throughout our con-ference for their inspiring con-certs. emetieit 2tea,teet Len Anderson, John Soneson, Ronald Nelson, Don Peterson. 79 CHAPEL CHOIR MALE CHORUS Row one: Eloise Anderson, Carol Bessey, Beth Tobiason, Audrey Kuehn, Nancy Schnorr, Jean Daniel-son, C. The organization on our campus which probably influenced more people than any other this year was our Chapel Choir. An extended spring tour to the west coast, be-ginning immediately after graduation and climaxing with the great centennial conference is scheduled and will undoubtedly be the high point of this year's activity. Their min-istry at special school occasions and in the churches of our St. Paul area has been a blessing to all listeners. The director, Professor C. Howard Smith, with the cooperation of each choir member, has made this one of the choir's most successful years. I Corinthians 9:24, 25 M 1- 86 87 Lowry Fredrickson FOOTBALL With the uncertainty of the draft sit-uation and the lack of returning letter-men, football at Bethel was in a precar-ious position at the beginning of the school season, and the thought of dis-continuing football was heard through-out the campus, but not for long. A few insistent fellows and a determined coach put their efforts to work and soon had a team aggregated and a spirit of cooper-ation worked up. The record of three losses and one victory doesn't in any measure express the success of the sea-son. Several games were cancelled be-cause opponents were unable to field a team. The most outstanding accomplish-ment of the season was that football remained at Bethel. Clifford Anderson Coach Elmer Fischer Dwight Anderson James Baxter Charles Borgeson End and captain Philip Carlson leaps high in the air to grab a pass from a teammate in Bethel's lone victory of the season against Morris. Rodney Kiel' Charles Lindgren Ronald Nelson For many years Bethel students, atheletes and administration have been looking forward to the day when they would have their own ath-letic gymnasium. Finally, it has come. To be ready for the Baptist General Conference meet-ings in June, it is a part of the centennial building project of the conference. It is the de-sire and prayer of the Bethel student body and faculty that the building can be used to exalt the name of Jesus Christ in athletics as well as all other realms of campus life. 5s: 4'44bla . 92 93 Varsity basketball squad — left to right: Gene Messenger, Donald Quarnstrom, Peter Unruh, Melton Nygren, Donald Peterson, James Mason, manager, Lowry Fredrickson, Robert Carlson, Ronald Nelson, Alfred Pierce. BASKETBALL Athletic Director Del Ray Peterson With the advent of the new gymnasium basketball at Bethel acquires a new role in extra-curricular activities. After one of the finest seasons in Bethel basketball history the athletic status of our school has gained a much desired reputation, and to gain a con-ference recognition is the hope of the athletic endeavors at Bethel. But under the thrill and joys so dear There is still an empty feeling When we recall the pleasures here And the bond which memory's sealing. Remember the time you came late to class And it was your turn for devotion? Remember the test I didn't quite pass? That really caused a commotion! Remember the day the alarms went off In the library quiet and still? Such an uproar where we'd scarce dare cough! How good to be in on the bill! "Remember . . . ." we say with a ghost of a sigh, When hearts ache at the thought of leaving. But now it is time to say, "Good-bye". Dear Bethel, please know we are grieving. — Anon. |
