Transcript | T L Published by the students of BETHEL COLLEGE AND SEMINARY ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA ADOLF OLSON In sincere appreciation for his spiritual counsel and faithful instruction the students of Bethel College and Seminary dedicate the Spire of 1948 to Adolf Olson, beloved professor of systematic theology, who this spring completed his twenty-ninth year of service in the seminary. His mild manner, his quiet dignity, his understanding helpfulness, and his scholar-ship will always be remembered by his students. Bethelites know him as one who is filled with the Spirit of God and whose life strongly ex-hibits the fruits of Christianity. page 4 page S page 6 page 7 page 10 page 11 - . .7",- . r,e - • 4 , G. ARVID HAGSTROM, D.D. President Emeritus • H. WYMAN MALMSTEN, B.A., G.Th. Assistant to the President PRESIDENT HENRY C. WINGBLADE, M.A., D.D. Depth of thought, exaltation of language, and a command of the words of great men mark him as a man of letters. Sincerity in prayer and purity in life and speech indicate that he is a man of God. Combining scholarship with faith, he is a living illustration of the tradition of the school he directs. page 12 page 13 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocricy. Proverbs 1:5 C~ flSS E S page 26 page 27 The year 1947 was an eventful one in the history of Bethel College, for it saw the crys-tallization of plans for expanding into a four-year school. The introduction of the third year of college studies marks the adoption of a new policy for developing the program of the school. Full academic accrediting was secured from the University of Minnesota for the new senior college curriculum, and plans are going forward to provide possi-bilities for majors in literature, sociology, his-tory, philosophy, psychology and education, and religious education. Accordingly, the Spire takes pride in presenting the first junior class of Bethel College. THELMA BURGESON SECRETARY Bristol, Conn. Students are classified as juniors, sophomores, five quarter-credits with an honor point ratio of at or freshmen in these pages according to the follow- least 1.0; sophomores, no less than forty quarter-ing academic standard: juniors, no less than ninety- credits; freshmen, less than forty quarter-credits. This year the well-known Bethel Male Chorus in-creased their audiences by setting out on March 29 for an extensive tour of two and one-half weeks. The chorus traveled 35,000 miles by chartered Greyhound bus, touching Illinois, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Minnesota, Under the leadership of Professor Stjernstrom, the chorus rendered their interpretations of sacred num-bers, spirituals, and Swedish hymns. Bob Mantzke handled the solo parts and Bert Anderson was ac-companist. Enhancing the chorus presentations was the Bethel Male quartet composed of Bob Sandin, Jim Rentz, Paul Leafblad, and Don Patet. Throughout the year the chorus gave concerts in chapel, during Homecoming, during Founders Week, and before and after their tour. _M= .114a. 1E, ao T1-1,1 0111i. amul page 84 A week's tour of Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska, was the prominent event of the year for the Girls' Chorus. The purpose of this organization is primarily to foster Christian friendship through the presentation of programs of spiritual fellowship and entertainment. BWA sponsors a program of "Big and Little Sisters" who become acquainted at the Big and Little Sister Tea and continue to remem-ber each other on special occasions during the year. The most important event of the year was the formal BWA Banquet in the form of a Smorgasbord which was the last meeting of the year. Sitting: Lee Kingsley, Mr. Schultz, Harold Christenson; Standing: Charles Germany, Bob Daley, Edward Avey, Victor Pearson, Doris Richert, and Virginia Hanson. Lee kingsley was one of two representatives from the jun-ior colleges who discussed world federation in a panel, which was broadcasted over the University of Minnesota radio station. Highlighting the forensic program of this year was the Rocky Mountain Speech Conference held at the University of Denver, Denver, Colorado. Our first team composed of Harold Christenson and Lee Kingsley established a superior rating and were un-defeated in debate, receiving award certificates. Lee Kingsley won first place in public speaking receiving the Watchel Award given by the Tau Kappa Alpha Forensic Honor Society of the Uni-versity of Denver. Harold Christenson won an ex-cellent rating award in discussion and public speak-ing. Although this team was Bethel's first entry in the Rocky Mountain Speech Conference, they es-tablished a very worthy reputation for our school among the judges and participants of the colleges and universities of the Rocky Mountain area. The national debate question for the year was, Resolved: "That a federal world government should be established." Besides the Rocky Mountain Speech Conference, the team participated in the Annual Discussion and Debate Conference at Iowa State Teachers college, the Annual Red River Valley For-ensics Tournament at Concordia college, the Eau Claire State Teachers College Speech Meet, and the Northwest Annual Debate Tournament at St. Thomas college. They competed against such teams as Notre Dame, St. Olaf college, the University of Denver, the University of Southern California, the University of Colorado, the University of Iowa, and others. In all of these tournaments our students es-tablished a very commendable record in debate, discussion, oratory, and extemporaneous speaking. Locally our teams debated with St. Thomas college, the University of Minnesota, and Hamline univers-ity. Regular college conference foot-ball has been the dream of the athletic department ever since the days of former coach Bill Adam. Last fall this hope was realized when thirty-five fellows came out for football. Arch Skalbeck was engaged as coach, and out of this material he molded a comparatively strong team. The Indians played their initial game on September 19, 1947, on the memorable Edwards Field in a muddy game with Rochester. Other games were played with Estherville and Austin junior colleges, the game with Austin being the Homecoming game. Throughout the season Bethel lost three games and triumphed once. There is much potential strength for a great team next year since football has become a first-rate sport at Bethel. page 102 page 103 Chuck Starr, Back Nels Nelson, End Bob Mantzke, Tackle Don Le Master, Back Dave Washburn, Center Vern Wallin, Back • Jim Schubring, Center Al Olsson, Back Don Nepstad, Guard Roy Johnson, Back page 104 page 105 "Doc" Goodrich, Guard Don Goldsmith, Tackle Left to right, standing: Everet Johnson, Roy Nelson, James Rentz, Coach Edwards, Lowell Bergeson, Conwell Lindstrom; seated: John Dischinger, Kenneth Greenman, John Porcella, LeRoy Sandberg, Edgar Eklof, Wayne Peterson. Out of fifteen games played, eleven were decided victories. A good representation turned out for basketball, many of them being regulars from last year's cagers. Weeks of practice and scrimmage under Coach Edwards brought the team into fine shape. In the first game of the season the Bethel quintet edged out Bethany 40 to 36. The Indians, led by their captain, Leroy Sandberg, triumphed over Rochester, 39 to 38, in a thrill-packed game. Two hard-to-lose games were dropped to Sioux Falls college and Northwestern Bible school, but at the close of the season Bethel reinstated itself by whipping Northwestern 49 to 35. Many commendable achievements were gained by this year's cagers. One of the most significant was Bethel's capturing second place in the South-ern Minnesota Junior College Conference. Also, Kenneth Greenman, Bethel's ace guard, was elected to the All-conference team. page 108 page 109 Sandy gives 'em the word Come to me, baby Bco.kEttaff c—CCOTEgOCZTC1 Bethel 40 . . .
