Variety pg. 7 . s J"K — i $ ' , .j?~ M 1 Wednesday, April 9, 2003 NEWSPAPER OF BETHEL COLLEGE Volume 78 Number12 Forensics ends season with strong standings By Rachel Head StaffWriter The forensics team ended their season with exciting results at the National Christian College Forensics Invitational at Point Loma in San Diego. Mar. 14-16. The team placed fifth out of the 22 colleges that participated in the tournament. Of the 25 students on the debate team. 13 participated in this tournament. The team's advisor. Dr. Michael Dreher, said they were able to "compete against schools from all across the country." A total of three hundred people competed in the tournament throughout the weekend. The members of the team competed in a variety of events and succeeded in helping the team's overall score, "Every one of our people scored points towards our team's performance," said Dreher. Edie Broadbent, Faith Kroeker, Kelli Meyer, Lisa Stauter, Lacy Larson, Pamela Kranz, and Jason Jenkins all placed in some of their individual events. Janell Draper and Bethany Piety made it to octafinals in one event, and Katrisa Bohne made it to semifinals in another event. Another highlight of the event was that Dreher was named the outstand ing coach of the year at this tournament. (See box below) Another recent tournament was the 21st Novice Nationals held at Cameron University from Feb. 28- Mar. 2. in which Bethel's team placed 4th overall out of 40 schools competing from all around the country. This tournament was only for first-year team members. Edie Broadbent placed 2nd and 8th in two separate events as well as made it to the semifinals for three events. Faith Kroeker and Bethany Piety also made it to the semifinals in an event. These tournaments involved several long days, from about 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. "Students were pretty much competing most of the day," said Dreher. The students would give their speeches, then judges would determine who would progress to semifinals and finals in each event. There are usually around 12 types of events at a tournament, and team members usually compete in more than one event. Junior Lacy Larson says it gives her experience. "It develops your communication skills." She added, "It's actually one of my favorite parts about being at Bethel." Dreher agrees. He says, "It's a wonderful chance to improve people's public speaking, to really be comfortable in front of an audience," Michael Dreher, associate professor of communication, was recently honored with the Travis G. Jones Memorial Outstanding Coach Award at the National Christian College Forensics Invitational, which was held at Pojnt Loma Nazarene University. The award was presented to Dreher "for his dedication, influence, support, and commitment to Christ-centered leadership in forensics education." 'Girls at work' in support of a cure - story on page 2 Students gathering in the RC gym after the Cancer Walk last Friday International Studies expands By Kristen Eickstadt Contributing Writer Beginning this fall, three new study abroad programs will be available to students. The sites will be in Spain, Australia and Thailand. Each of the terms was created with specific student groups in mind. The Spain term is geared towards Spanish majors, the Australia term is more for music, art and theater students, and the Thailand term is fitted towards sophomores, and, don't worry, all classes are in English. Students studying abroad with these programs will be attending schools in the respective country, but trips have been planned to allow those students to see and experience the area outside of the schools. In Spain there are two trips planned. One is spending five days in southern Spain: another is two days in Madrid. Australia has three trips offered. A two-day trip seeing limestone caves, the world's steepest railway and more. Another trip will be to the Glcdwood Homestead, giving studenis the chance to feed kangaroos and shear sheep. The last trip is to Canberra, Australia's capi tal, to see the national museum, the parliament house, the Australian war memorial and other historic sites. The Thailand term begins with a three-day hike to a tribe village as a part of orientation, and then has two mid-term breaks that allow independent travel. The Spain term will be in Segovia, which is an hour away from Madrid. The Australia program will be held at the Wesley Institute in a suburb of Sydney. Payap University, in Chiang Mai. is where the Thailand term will be. In Spain and Australia, students will be housed with families in the area. In Thailand, students will live in dorms in individual rooms, but have the option of staying in a home for two to three weeks when they are two-thirds through the semester. Unlike most of Bethel's study abroad programs, there will not be a professors going: instead, Bethel is partnering with schools or existing programs in these areas. All programs cost the same as a semester at Bethel (tuition, room and board) and include airfare and the various excursions. For any interested students, the application deadline has been extended to April 15, and more information can be found at http://www.bethel.edu/Academics/Intcrnatio nal/Semester/index.html
