Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies Greg Boyd plans to retire from his activities at Bethel after Fall semester 2002. Boyd is currently the head pastor at Woodland Hills Church, author of several theological publications, speaker at many evangelical events, and professor at Bethel, in addition to being a father and husband. Before his tenure at Bethel, Boyd earned a degree in philosophy al the University of Minnesota, a Master's in Theology at Yale and a Doctorate of Theology at Princeton. In addilion, Boyd Courtesy photo continued his work in pastoral ministry at various congregations during his master's and doctoral programs. Boyd has endured some memorable moments as Bethel, both challenging and encouraging. He remarked on some of his favorite moments here at Bethel. "The thing I will miss the most will be some of the one on c one interactions with studenis and the interactions with lhe faculty," he said. "There are a lot of positive memories." Provost Jay Barnes will remember Boyd for his enthusiasm for teaching and his commitment to family. • "Greg makes people think more deeply about teaching and how it applies to our lives," Barnes said. Earlier this year, Boyd experienced God's leading in a different direction. "Around January or February, one time on a Saturday after- "Greg makes people think more deeply about teaching and how it applies to our lives." noon I felt I was really going into a funk," Boyd recounted. "So I asked the Lord, to try to figure out the issue here and I finally entertained the idea or admitted out loud. I said, 'Lord, are you asking me to resign from Bethel?'The minute I even asked the question, it was like God hollering from the clouds 'Duh! I have been telling you for over a year.'" Boyd felt that God had been speaking to him for a while; however, it was only recently that Boyd decided to heed his calling. After returning from spring break, students were given typical registration packets; however this year special instructions were attached explaining the step-by-step process. The new registration allowed students to register from their dorm rooms or computer lab. eliminating the hasile of wailing in line at the registrar's office. On-line registration also allows students to add or drop a class with lhe click of a mouse. No longer arc students required to wrestle with add/drop forms to fill their desired credit load. "You didn't have to go lo a cluttered office," said freshman Mark Elsjcrsma. "Numerous people could register at the same time." Studenis who" arc currently participating in the American Studies Program sent Iheir registration preferences into the Registrar's office where registration was done for them at their designated time. Bethel originally purchased the CARS software package that enables on-line regisralion in the fall. CARS Information system created the software that the Bethel community uses on-line the Bethel College Information Access System. Systems Analyst Jay Swisher and' Registrar Computer Support Coordinator Wayne Anlhcnal then made the modifications needed to provide access lo users who had met the registration requirements. Once Swisher activated the software, it look two and a half months to make the necessary modifications. However, once the system was running, implementation was accelerated lo meel the April deadline for senior/junior registration "Our main concern was making things as smooth as possible and not unnecessarily slowing things down." said Anthcnat. Although things went smoothly overall, Anthenat acknowledges that changes need to be. made for next year's registration. ■ "We will definitely be re-documenting things for next fall." said Anthenat. "However, very few things happened lhat don't happen through normal registration." Many students struggled to access the registration strictly from the informational packet. Others had difficulty gaining access lo registration once they reached the website. Either advisors had mistakenly • not given advisees access for Fall 2002 or the Business office had not given the Registrar the authority based on an unpaid expense. Most students were disappointed with the evening registration appointments. "It was frustrating not having anyone there to help you out. said sophomore Eric Boal. "It can also ruin a Friday night." The Registrar acknowledges many of the obstacles met with the first-time on-line registration. Administrators expect lo beiter-educale both studenis and faculty in efficiently operating the new system for next year. In addition. Freshmen Seminar classes for next year will cover the process. for freshmen and transfers. Expect some changes for the future, bul on-line registration is here to stay.
