Board of Trustees evaluates future of Bethel campus By Bill Lent News Editor On the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 4, Student Body President Rob Anderson and Vice President Erin Tri met with the Board of Trustees along with administration vice presidents for their first meeting of the 2001- 2002 school year The focus of this year's meeting was Sasaki Associates' blueprint evaluation of an additional campus dorm and a new student center that would house a new dining center, bookstore, game room, and post office among redeveloped student and administration offices and meeting rooms. Sasaki Associates is an architectural firm from Boston that created the master design for the Bethel campus, namely the Community Life Center. In fact, Sasaki Associates has intermittently developed and executed the blueprint for Bethel College since the late 1960's. "We have sought what we think is the best architectural firm in the nation," said Bruce Kunkel,Vice President for Campus Services. The first of many concepts under consideration is construction of a freshmen dorm atop Freshman Hill that would connect the three freshmen dorms: Getsch, Edgren, and Bodien. This year- the entire student senate has doubled with the new system. Now there are representatives from each dorm, totaling 32 senators rather than the 16 of years past [see page 3]. "It was time for a change," said Rory Lemke, Chair of the Student Senate. "We feel that we will get more ideas by having people on senate who represent the people they live with, notjust their class. With a growing student body, the more people on senate mean more people that wc know on campus." There have been challenges getting started under the new system. For instance, there are only three senators returning from last year, meaning that 29 senators are learning the job as they go. Basic informalities, let alone the job itself, have taken some time. "It has been difficult just doing the basics so far, like teaming all the names and becoming friends so that we can help each other, but it is coming. We want to be a family," said Lemke. ,.
