This gave him the top position in what has been declared the best College Republican organization in the country. In addition to lhat honor, the state board gave Krueger the George W. Bush Activist of the Year award. "College Republicans in Minnesota is a great opportunity for students. To lead this organization and lo dedicate myself to working with students from across the slate to elect a Republican governor and senator will be a true honor—and a lot of fun," said Krueger. Krueger defeated his only opponent, Phil Kroll, a student from the University of Minnesota, handily, through the support of nearly every club chairman in the state, and a nomination from Chris Tiedeman, a former state chairman, the treasurer of the National "He is one of those leaders who's in it for a cause; he's not in it for himself." -Eric Hoplin Former chairman College Republicans and University of Minnesota Law School student. In fact, as further evidence of Bethel's strong presence in Minnesota College Republicans, it was the only school that had any alternates present, and was, in fact, the only school with more than five delegate slots to fill all of them. When presenting the award, Hoplin described Krueger's history of "selfless service" to the organization. "He is one of those leaders who's in it for a cause; he's not in it for himself," Hoplin said, referring to a point during the election when Krueger had the opportunity to meet the current vice president, then candidate Dick Cheney when he was in Minnesota, Krueger turned down lhat opportunity in order to run a mock election on campus. "He is always very Continued on page 4 McMullen takes first at forensics Novice Nationals By Shannon Novotne Staff writer At the 2001 Novice Nationals tournament at the College of Eastern Ulah, Mar. 9-11, freshman Steven McMullen led the forensics team with a first place finish. "Steven's national title marks the sixth national championship Bethel has received in forensics since 1998," said Michael Dreher, a communications professor who is the director of forensics. As a whole, the team performed well, placing in the top eight learns for parliamentary debate. Other individuals besides McMullen had fine performances. Interpretation events arc performed with a script and are up lo 10 minutes long. Taking sixth place in Dramatic Interpretation was freshman Jessica Blezien. Dramatic Interpretation is similar to solo drama in which one performs multiple characters from a stage play or screenplay. Taking seventh place in Oral Interpretation was freshman Terilyn Johnston. Oral Interpretation consists of two or three genres (prose, poetry or drama) organized around a theme. McMullen performed in Limited Preparation events for Extemporaneous Speaking, in which he had 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute speech on a topic in current events. "I gave four different speeches, each on a different question, ranging from the politi cal agenda of the Supreme Court to George W. Bush's education policy," McMullen said. In Public Address events, freshman Danielle Meyer was third in After Dinner Speaking, and Johnston took sixth place. In Parliamentary Debate, McMullen and freshman Katrista Bohne made it to the quarterfinals. Dreher has been the director of the novice nationals tournament since 1998. Attending the tournament were schools from 12 different states, including Utah, South Dakota, Kentucky, California and Kansas. In addition to the excellent performance at lhe nationals, Bethel has had 54 top 10 finishes this year, as well as six individual tournament championships-including Bethel's first state championship (Christina Johnson in Extemporaneous Interpretation). The forensics team looks forward to next year's Novice Nationals, in hopes of keeping their good streak alive.
