Fridav/November 4/1994 The official student publication of Bethel College Volume 70, Number S1 Clearing up the Security Confusion by Jenna Conyers CONTRIBUTING WRITER You pass them in the parking lot as you search for an empty spot. They wave from the booth as you drive in and out of campus. They administer parking tickets and stand on the sidelines at the Bethel football games. So, what else does the Department of Security and Safety do at Bethel? Actually, quite a lot. Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of the Department of Security and Safety is not to ruin our day by leaving a "friendly notice" on our car. The department's responsibilities are much greater than that. According to Bruce Kunkel, Director of Institutional Services, parking is "always a secondary issue to us. A higher concern for us is patrolling the evening and night hours." So, although you may only see them just when you are ready to sneak into ii parking spot marked "reserved for so and so," the Department of Security and Safety has many other duties. Kunkel explained, "Bethel is unique among other colleges in the metro area because wc have a campus lhat we can control." Bethel is unlike the campuses of the U of M, Hamline, Macalester, or St. Thomas, all of which have public streets running through them. "Providing a safe and secure campus for all students, faculty, staff, administration and guests is our main concern," Kunkel explained. With regard to the staffing of security workers at night, Kunkel stated that there arc "always two officers on duty all night, with a support shift from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m." The support shift consists of an additional officer available to respond to any calls or security related incidents. One of the two officers on duty serves as a patrol officer, who constantly patrols the entire campus in a security vehicle. But in addition to their safety responsibilities , the Department of Security and Safety also provides an escort service, parking assistance during special campus events, and works in conjunction with the Ramsey County and New Brighton police departments during security alert situations. It is also the responsibility of the Department of Security and Safety to meet all requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OS HA regulates institutions throughout the country on various safety issues. For example, OSI IA guidelines make the Department of Security and Safely responsible for ensuring that all of the science labs contain the proper safety and emergency equipment. In regard to parking on campus, according to Kunkel, the parking "problem" was due to the reconstruction of the upper east lot. Kunkel claims that because the construction has now been completed, "We have empty spaces again in the upper lots." Kunkel further stated lhat even when parking was more of a challenge due to the construction, at no time did security neglect their normal safety and security duties. 'The primary responsibility [of security] is not parking enforcement." Kunkel explained that, due to the rise of violence on many college campuses, "Security and safety has become a much greater issue on all college campuses across the country, including Bethel." If any student has a security related concern, he/she is encouraged to call security at any time (x6055). On behalf of the Bediel Department of Security and Safety, Kunke! hopes lhat students, faculty, and slaff will realize lhat making the campus safe and secure is the department's highest priority. Senate meets with the President and discusses marrow drive by Jeremy Gavin STAFF WRITER On Oct. 16 the Bethel student Senate, along with the rest of the Bethel Student Association (BSA), were invited to have dinner widi Bethel College President George Brushaber and his wife in the Board of Regents room in the CLC. Senior Senator Dan Lundberg saw the meeting as a positive link between President Bnishaber and the students saying, "It's good to know that the President is making an effort to get to know students in leadership." Freshman Senator Jason Carlson said, "It was a good chance to interact with Presidenl Bnishaber." Before being treated to a steak dinner, President Brushaber told about himself and introductions of the guests were made. Committee of die whole is a time near the end of the meeting when senators and guests are able to discuss anything on their mind and get feedback. According to one sophomore senator, "This may be the most productive time Senate has had togedier." One of the ideas discussed in committee of the whole was to get involved widi die Twin Cities Collegiate Marrow Drive. The program establishes coordinating com mittees that plan donating times, publicize, and recruit donors at ten colleges and universities in the Twin Cities area, including Bethel. Senate's job would be to join the coordinating committee at Bethel. The present coordinating committee at Bethel is run by Campus Ministries and Health Service. Bnishaber summarized die feelings of the Bethel community by stating in the newsletter that "the entire Bediel community will miss David even as we recognize the new opportunities for him.
